Can anyone help. I picked up a helmet from an antique shop. It's a steel helmet, olive green with the marking S.M L.D 1941. RO & Co

The man in the shop said it was a fireman's helmet, but I'm not convinced? Can anyone help? I have googled the marking, but I got nothing back.

    Thanks, Alex

Hi Alex, welcome to the forum!

I take it that we talking about a British steel helmet here? Can you upload a photo?

I can tell you that the maker will be Rubery Owen & Co Ltd, Darlaston

    Cheers, Ade.

If I was wnating to restore it is there anyway to get the rust off? It doesn't seem to be too bad, just on the surface and the webbing inside is in good condition.

Please don't be tempted to "restore" it in any way. You will wipe off any value it has to serious collectors.

Rust will not get worse if kept in a normal modern heated house.

What you can do is to wipe it over with a clean white lint free cloth. This will take off any loose rust particles.

    Cheers, Ade.
