British Helmet ?

The liner (specifically the "pad") in this one actually looks like it may be a South African-made helmet.

Hi,
Nice helmet the pad in it is not british, the usual liner pad is a cross
pad in the brit helmet. What is the makers mark and date in the liner, you will find this on one of the liner arms it will be embossed in the arm. It is poss, S.A, issue.

To my mind this a British MkII helmet. A very early one. Most likely a Civil Defense helmet. The green band is not known to me. In Holland this would mean use by a medical unit. Since this helmet is British this remark is not of much use.

The oval oil cloth pad is correct for a British liner of the late thirties. Many WW1 helmets were refurbished to become the MkI* with this liner. New helmets were produced as well. These were the MkII's.

The cruciform pad came later. The South African oval top pads were made of black felt.

Most MkII's that are encounterd today have the cruciform pad.

Resuming: British MkII, CD use by unknown unit.

Very interesting article Emile.
I read that the MK I and MK II chinstrap are the same exept for
"apart from the addition of smaller end rings to prevent bunching."
I think I have to see that in the flesh.

Hi all,

I took this scan of the files section of the Yahoo Helmet Collectors forum.

I suppose it is common property to use, if not for commercial purposes. I am not sure though. any ideas?

The pad type cushion was updated by the crosspad around the end of 1939.
You tend to find helmets with the pad cushion like the one shown are normally dated around 1938 - 1939.
