    Default british? helmet, pre ww2?

    Hi,
I don't know much about pre ww2 british helmets so I'm hoping for some help, please:
I can not find any marks stamped into the steel. There is a rectangular red ink stamp and various black marks inside the liner but i can't read them... read somewhere on-line that the red stamp means that it is pre 1916, so can anyone confirm or deny that this helmet is:
    A) British?
    B) ww1?

Also, does anyone know what the writing on it is about? I can't make it all out but it apears to say:
    A28 DC5
    ?NS
    SQN???HBW
    H?? 6323
    9
    74

    THANKS,
    jim
PS i will post my 1939 helmet, once i've dug it out.

It is WWI, but circa 1917 not pre 1916 I would say. the chinstrap lugs appear a bit odd with one of them having been changed/repaired. British shell s have split logs on the chinstraps not peened over rivets.

No real idea on the writing on it, perhaps flying related?

    Jerry

    Whatever its just an opinion.

I've never seen a Liner retaining bolt with a head that large, usually they were really small welded pins.............certainly had some alterations made to it.................

There seems to be some disagreement, so i think I need to get it apart and look for further marks.
