Default British helmet- what are the holes for?

    Hi,
British helmet, no liner, elastic strap with 1940 on rivet plates, no other markings evident.

What are the two lots of four drilled holes alongside the rivets for- previous strap, radio gear, gas cape, etc...?

    Cheers, jim.

    Hi,
It means the helmet did not pass the safety/strength tests to be used as a combat helmet and would have been isssued to non coms, such as police etc...4 holes means its a 1D made of mild steel

nice old helmet shell though, you could always get a liner and complete it. You beat me to the answer vonbond, lol.

Oh yeah! (was in a hurry earlier).
Good to know it's all proper, not done in metalwork class or summat!
