I have been doing some research since I found out that the helmet was South African.
There was a very small amount of South African soldiers on D-day ,there is not alot of info on them if they were in a South African unit or mix with the regular British troops how many there were and where they were located.

Photos 1 & 2 looks to be a British Mark II
    Photos 3 & 4 are a British Mark I
Photo 5 is hard to tell, but seems to be a police issued helmet as it is painted blue. (this photo isn't showing in the post)
Photo 6 is a South African Mark II

Yes it's British WW1, no doubt about it. The giveaway is the chinstrap lug, which is held on with a split pin. US made helmets used a rivet.

If you want it double confirmed, what are the markings on it?

Although it is very probable that SA soldiers were present on D-Day.I have a short history on South African Helmets from the curator of the SA Military Museum that explains in part that,
"The first three-quarter million helmets were made from ISCOR material. A number of these helmets were shipped to Great Britain for use by fire fighting and A.R.P Services during the blitz on London. The weekly production of helmets was between 10 000 and 12 000. Later, in order that ISCOR could concentrate on other goods, steel supplies from ICSOR were discontinued and supplies were obtained from the United States."

So im just wondering if some of these ARP Helmets were requisitioned for use in the lead up to the invasion ?
