Here's a Police special constable, pretty sure the 2 white bands stands for a sergeant. Inside the crown of the helmet he has added a piece of felt probably to keep his head warmer. Both helmet & liiner are dated 1939 & made by BMB.

    Another nice helmet.

Herw is my War Reserve Police helmet to go with the picture. Helmet is BMB but badly stamped 193? and the liner is BMB 1939.

    Mick,
To answer your question, my undertanding is the Police had 4 types of Reserve Force:
    1. 1st Police Reserve, retired Police officers.
    2. Special Constabulary, unpaid, part time volunteers.
    3. War Reserve, full time, paid for the period of the war only.
    4. Womens Auxiliary, women volunteers.

Specials were mainly used for the additional tasks that War created, registering aliens, support roles at bomb sites, collating casualty lists etc.

Love the helmet, nice to see the WR on it. The shell will be dated 1939.

Just a piece of semi-relevant trivia: the famous British serial killer John Reginald Christie (of 10 Rillington Place fame) was a War Reserve Policeman in London during the war. That could have even been his helmet, you never know

    Hi,
Christie was a horrible man, i have a family story to tell, about a week before he was caught we were all on a small outing on the common in Putney london not far from where we lived. Two of my sisters were playing nearby and a man tried to intice them into a bushy area, my dad saw this and chased this man, he turned out to be John Christie, he got away that time but was caught i think near Putney bridge, and as we all know Hanged for his crimes.
    ( thank god ) dave.
