    Default MkII POLICE WAR RESERVE

    Hi All,
A standard MkII painted dark blue for Police, it has 2 white bands around the helmet to donate that it is Police war reserve. The Police had 3 types of reserves, the special constables, old retired constables, & the auxiliary full time paid volenteers.
The helmet is dated 1939 & made by BMB, the liner is also 39 dated & made by VERO.

Very nice helmet. I have two Police helmets, although one is relatively poor in condition the other is in great condition as can be seen in the photo's (The Police law book is dated 1938 and has some great phrases in it!)
Having seen pictures of your wonderful collection do I take it you have a Sgt and Insp version as well?

Um...How could they be volunteers if they were paid?

They offered to join weren't conscripted hence volunteers. The special constables were also volunteers, weren't paid a situation which continues today, and performed duties as and when time permitted. Nice to see the helmets in such good condition, they are getting harder to find, about £60-100 now and a lot have rust problems.

Can/could people be conscipted to serve in a police force in Great Britain? In the US, the only thing you can be conscripted for is military service, although we aren't doing that now, but have in the past.

I don't think you can be conscripted into the police at present. Every citizen is required to assist a constable if requested to do so, someone fighting to avoid arrest, and can be prosecuted for failing to do so. In the earlies before an established police service everyone was required to turn out for a hue and cry situation where a criminal was being pursued.
