Looks to have been painted khaki green inside, making it an early one.

It is a shame as you said, perhaps there was a distinct reason for it to have been painted silver, I have a MK 4 that was painted silver under many layers of Khaki vehicle paint, though why I cannot fathom, apart from the silver it looks in great condition and a possible candidate for gentle restoration

I have shown it to a couple of collectors, none think I would be able to get the paint off without removing the rough finish beneath.

I have a couple of cans of the proper colour spray paint, as it is made for a fellow north of me, I may just spray over it, or sell it as it is.

    Thanks for the comments!!

Hi Dean now that's enough to bring a tear to ones eye if you are contemplating painting it try a little acetone first on a Q-tip around the edge of the rim and see if the silver paint will lift with out ruining the textured finish IMO you have nothing to lose and dependent on what type of paint was used and the age it may lift .
