    Default WW2 British chin straps

The Mk1 chin strap was first used in 1937 on the Mk1* helmet, but due to the Mk1 chin strap lugs & the large wire loops on the end of the chin strap it kept slipping off.
Some months later in 1937 the Mk2 chin strap & Mk2 chin strap lugs replaced them.
From then on until economy measures came into play when the Mk2 chin strap was replaced by the Mk3 chin strap in 1941.

    Default Mk4

The Mk4 chin strap like the Mk4 helmet, was made in WW2 but probably never got to the front before the war ended.
It has one end with a brass cover unlike the Mk3

    Default Home Front

When you move to home front chin straps, this opens up a never ending list, as many, especially on the civilian protective helmet were home made.
Due to ever increasing economy measures some chin straps had cheaper steel springs instead of the non magnetic types. These straps were only for the home front & are marked with a white or black asterisk or M, meaning magnetic.

Not only were the chin straps being used on metal helmets they were also used on bakelite, compressed fibre & leather.
The chin straps themselves were also made of different materials too, from webbing types to leather & rubber.
