The Soviets loved the 37mm cannon the P-39 carried. One good hit and it was goodbye.
The airframe was somewhat outclassed by late 42 but the 37mm was highly respected for it's hitting ability. The Soviets received over 4700 of this type (around half of all production) and lost over 1000.
The RAAF operated around 20 for a short period of time in 42 as a stop gap fighter for air defence on the Australian mainland. These were handed back to the USAAF in 43 as MKV Spit's became more available (the Churchill fighters).
