As he was in the 6 Kompanie of Heeres Pionier Brigade 42 I think the first of these 3 posts is more relevant as he would of been in the 2nd Battalion. Here is it's entry on Lexikon... http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...nierBrig42.htm
All 3 above posts taken from Independent Pioniere-Truppen

Re: Heeres-Pionier-Brigade 42
Welcome to the forum Welsman;
Here's your Opa's first unit- the one he began in when he entered service, and from which he received his Erkennungsmarke:
Pionier-Bataillon 20
1. Aufstellung:
* 1.10.1934 als Pionier-Bataillon Sperenberg, 15.10.1935 Pionier-Bataillon 20, 1938 motorisiert,
Friedensstandort Hamburg-Harburg, Wehrkreis X.
2. Unterstellung:
20. Infanterie-Division (motorisiert), 20. Panzer-Grenadier-Division
3. Ersatz:
20 Hamburg-Harburg, Wehrkreis X
And some slightly different information on the units hucks216 already posted:
Pionier-Lehr-Bataillon 1
1. Aufstellung:
* 2.11.1939 in Dessau-Roßlau, Wehrkreis XI, infolge Übernahme des Pionier-Lehr-Bataillon
(*1.10.1936 als Pionier-Lehr- u. Versorgungs-Bataillon, Friedensstandort Dessau-Roßlau) in
das Feldheer, wird 1945 II./H.Pionier-Brigade 42.
2. Unterstellung:
Heerestruppe, Frankreich, Rußland, zuletzt Galizien (AOK 17), dann Ostpreußen (AOK 2)
3. Ersatz:
2 (Pionier-Lehr), später 4 (Pionier-Lehr) Dessau-Roßlau
Pionier-Lehr-Bataillon 2
1. Aufstellung:
* 10.12.1939 in Dessau-Roßlau, Wehrkreis XI, aus dem Restkommando des Pionier-Lehr-Bataillon 1
Brigade 47.
2. Unterstellung:
Heerestruppe, Rußland
3. Ersatz:
4 (Pionier-Lehr) Dessau-Roßlau, Wehrkreis XI
Heeres-Pionier-Brigade 42
1. Aufstellung:
* November 1944: Stab aus Stab Pionier-Regiment 677, I. aus Pionier-Bataillon 42, II. aus Pionier-
Lehr-Bataillon 1.
2. Gliederung:
I. 1-3, II. 4-6
3. Unterstellung:
Heerestruppe: Weichselbogen, Schlesien (17. Armee), das II. detachiert bei 9. Armee.
The bold text was done by me since it's relevant- if your Opa's final unit was 6. Heeres-Pionier-Brigade 42, indeed hucks216 is quite right, he was in the II. Bataillon, and that was formed using personnel from Pionier-Lehr-Bataillon 1. Since Pionier-Lehr-Bataillon 2 became II./Volks-Pionier-Lehr-Brigade 47, obviously your Opa may have only been there temporarily or perhaps before he went to Pi. Lehr Batl. 1, or maybe he went back to 1 after he was with 2 and it's just not listed. But everything makes sense- a soldier's Ersatz unit was just where he started and received his basic training, and sometimes the field unit he was assigned to wasn't directly associated- in this it wasn't. But it's clear how the field units are related. II./Heeres-Pionier-Brigade 42 is listed as being detached to the 9. Armee, and the last entry for its Schlacht- und Gefechtsbezeichnungen is:
16. Rückzugskämpfe zwischen Weichsel und Oder 13.1.1945-Ende 1.1945
dabei: Verteidigung von Warschau 13.1.1945-18.1.1945
Verteidigung von Posen 22.1.1945-23.2.1945
Frankfurt und Küstrin Anf. 2.1945-16.4.1945
südlich Berlin (Kessel von Halbe) 17.4.1945-1.5.1945
So from all this, if you have the dates associated with the various units your Opa served in, you can see where he was at those times, and even where he might have been last.
I hope this helps
Ohhhhh- pillage then burn...
