Looking for Herr Hauf
When I was a kid (mid 70's) I met a fellow in Wiesbaden Germany by the name of Hauf. He gave me his Iron Cross 1st Class (still in box) and his silver wound badge. He said he received his decorations for hand-to-hand combat while in Russia. He also showed me his 4 bullet wounds. Based on this scant info 1.) Iron cross 1st class recipient, 2. lived in Wiesbaden, 3. fought on the Russian front 4.) Survived the war. Is there any strategies you recommend to get more info on this individual?

I believe, but am not sure, that you can only search the archives if you can prove that you are related to this gentleman. It does sound interesting, though. I would love to see your WB and EK1

very fine ek1 and wb i would agree with christina that as long as you proved you were a relation or had his consent they would let you but i would ask ade as he is very good at reasearching previous soldiers

Hi Pablo, sadly you will not be allowed to access his records in the archives as you are not next of kin.
All I can suggest in trying the German phone book.

An Albert Hauf is living in Wiesbaden and a Bernhard Hauf in Kostheim which is nearby , do they ring a bell ?

Thanks Paul E. Albert does sound familiar. I may give him a call, but my German is sehr schlecht.
