Default My collection of old medal books and pamphlets

For a while now I have been looking out for the more obscure Third Reich medal collector’s books and pamphlets which were around in the 50s, 60s and 70s. I think they’re interesting in their own right as records of a bygone age where information on the hobby was very hard to come by. It amazes me that anyone in those days actually managed to collect genuine pieces with the scant information that was available. However, I suppose the flipside of that is there were far more veterans with first hand knowledge of the pieces, and an abundance of affordable genuine medals to buy.

Anyway I thought it might be interesting to share the books I have collected. There may be some here that you have not come across before. I’ve included the front cover, publishing data and a couple of sample pages from each.

First up we have ‘Nazi Medals and Decorations’ by James A. Sawicki, published in 1958. Pretty well known but over 50 years old now.

Finally we have ‘Insignia, Badges and Decorations of the Third Reich and Occupied Countries’ by R. Kahl. This one was published in Holland. This is an A4 sized hardback book, but with disappointingly small half size illustrations.

Very nice! I like these old books, most are out dated but still fascinating
