New information I found out about Josef was that he was in the SA-Gruppe Nordwest Hilfswerk from 1935 until 1938 when he got moved to SA-Gruppe Hochland.
Some background on Sa-Gruppe Nordwest Hilfswerk-
Following the disband of NSDAP in Austria, a number of SA members flew in Germany to form the "Austrian Legion" (Ost. Legion)
this organisation took name of Hilfswerk Nordwest until Anschluss

I have received the information from Westmoreland Research. Here's a file of all of the information. It was a pleasure working with him. https://www.hightail.com/e?phi_actio...08350200000000

Interesting. I have an M16 SA Gruppe Hochland helmet that is named. Wonder if Westomoreland Research could research my guy.

Here's what Mike told me to summarize the files:

As you will see, your great grandfather was primarily assigned to a truck that supported a Signals Detachment. Not everyone knew how to drive a vehicle, and your great grandfather did, so this was a natural assignment, and he drove trucks for several units.

Oddly, and unknown to the Senior Archivist at NARA and to myself, there are document identifying your great grandfather to an SA Mountain Regiment in 1941. It was thought that this unit was disbanded much earlier, closer to the night of the long knives in 1934, so it was a surprise to see this. Further, your great grandfather had training in espionage and perhaps oversaw a punishment unit. There are several early autobiographies as well.

He was posted to Alpenland and this would be a natural transition to the various alpine units being raised in that area, Skanderbeg being one of them.

He died in early autuum 1944, about the time when Skanderberg was starting to be dissolved after increasingly bigger and oftener partisan attacks.

They had extremely hard fighting conditions over in Balkan.
