There are a number of photos that have really had an effect on me over the years - wondering what happened to the subjects of those photos. Funk's photo is one of those. With only about 300 of the 12th SS surviving the Normandy battle, I had always assumed that he had perished. What horrors he must have experienced. I know what the Normandy and Brittany campaigns did to my Uncle, who survived, but who, as my Aunt said shortly before he passed in 2009, was never the same. R.I.P. Heer Funk.

The picture is haunting, Heer Funk exhibits what US combat vets often describe as "the 1000 yard stare".
