The gates of hell were opened and we accepted the invitation to enter" 26/880 Lance Sgt, Edward Dyke. 26th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers , ( 3rd Tyneside Irish )

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

    Sorry to hear this.

Some consolation can be taken from knowing that not only did Otto Carius live to see a very old age, but was able to remain active and mentally sharp until the very end.

In the end, this is the best that any of us can hope for.

Very true Andreas he has led a long and full life , the last correspondance i had with him was about one of his Kompanie Tigers which was abandoned in the Auwere area in Estonia , despite the hunderds of requests he got for photos , meetings etc he always answered my questions promptly and in his own hand , a reamrkable Tank Commander and man .

Another living link to those events so fascinating to us all here is broken.

Regardless of which master they served the few remaining of these men are a precious asset to our society if only we can hear their testimonies and learn from their experiences.

When they were plenty nobody wanted to hear let alone listen. Now they are so few and people want to know. I hope it is not too late.

Old soldiers never die, they just fade away!

    RIP wise old man!

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing he cares more about than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature with no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

As an Armor Veteran myself, I express my deepest respect and awe in view of this soldier's record of combat achievement...Surely he's in Valhalla sharing war-stories with Michael Wittmann...Ich hatt' einen Kameraden...
    cheers, Glenn
