Researching a soldier

I'm doing some (or trying to) research a german soldier from WW2, does anybody know some good databases online, I've looked all morning but in vein as most I have found have not been terribly helpful, if anyone does know of some could you please let me know, thanks in advance!

If the soldier died during a war you might find some info at this website. Knowledge of a bit of German is helpful. Good luck.

Thank you, only issue is I only have a surname and service number, unfortunately that site only allows for the last name, first name and other credentials not the service number, thanks again though!

If all you have is his surname and service number (do you mean his Dogtag number?) then the chances of finding anything out about him isn't going to be good as it's just not enough to go on.
