The Ship " Albert Leo Schlageter"
This was the third ship of a series of 4 that were built to german navy.
It was built in hamburg in 1937. In the end of the war, during the sharing of spoils of war, it was taken by the US, and after just 3 years it was sold to the brazilian fleet for a modic amount of 5000 dollars to compensate for the losses made by german u- boats, during the war.
In 1961 it was purchased by portugal and was given the name "Sagres".
It is still used by our navy to train cadets. Its a school ship.
This is the link to the complete story.
Cheers.

Re: The Ship " Albert Leo Schlageter"
I cant believe im seeing these ships in their actual glory and ill tell you why, about 20yrs ago, one of our local fish shops had a broken and badly damaged wooden model of a schooner that was on a shelf behind the counter, i knew the owner quite well, and asked him if he had ever thought of having it repaired, he told me that it had come down through his family and that he couldnt find anyone to take the repairs on, also that it was a chandlers shop model that had come from Germany, i ended up repairing it and he paid for the wood , glue, etc it took me 3 months of shaping the broken masts mending the decking, the brass railings, re-rigging and adding new sails, when i had finished it looked exactly like the ones shown in the pictures, even down to the golden figure heads, when i came to deliver it to him, he had shut up shop, moved from the area and ive never seen him since, so i now have a wooden model schooner about three foot long two and a half foot high up in the loft because its too big to display, then to top it all i dropped it so its got to be repaired again!!!!
