I'm guessing, but I would say a religious pin based on the cross symbol on the left side. One of the saints perhaps?
No saint; this is Friedrich Ludwig Jahn ("Turnvater Jahn"), founder of the Turner (Gymnastics) movement.
The cross on the left is the Turner's symbol; it is made up of four "F"s for their motto "frisch, fromm, fröhlich, frei" [fresh, pious, joyful, free], on the right side is the "DT" monogram for the Deutscher Turnerbund.
Thanks guys! The guy did not lie to me! Rich A. in Pa.
