I didn't realize they forced certain people into the SS. I imagined that they would have wanted people devoted to it by choice. I read a book by Christopher Browning, Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland, and it talks about a police battalion made up of men who were found unfit for military service but were used to both round up and kill the Jewish population across Poland.
Correct. For the most part, which is wildly hypocritical, the SS and especially Himmler knew what the killing operations were. He knew just how mentally wicked the killing of Women and children was. Himmlers mindset was to use men who had no feeling. Men who were alcoholics, criminals and just sociopaths to carry out the actions in the East. The character of a man in the Einsatzgruppen was much different than the average LSSAH or general Waffen SS soldier at least in the years before 42-43'.

Feldpost 31 - East, 11.1.44
Dear Parents!
Unfortunately I have not received any post yet as I am still stationed in this damned village by myself. I have nothing to do so I am writing more often for once. I am quite well on the whole, even though I have not received any rations for eight days now. I always say before I really feel the hunger ten Russians would have starved to death. It is of course very nice to be able to have a good rest and take care of oneself. But I cannot bear the lazy life for very long.
For today I do not know any more news to write about. But I hope I will find out very many when I re-join the unit.
So I close with warmest regards.
Heil Hitler!
Günter.

Anyone here who is more experienced when it comes to Feldpost then me? I would love to know your thoughts about this group, for future translation and sharing!

Feldpost 32 - East, 22.1.44
A very touching letter to Günters mother.. One can only imagine who Hanna is and what connections she has to Günter but I would most certainly belive she is he's girlfriend back home in Walsrode. Please also note that I forgot to mention in the previous letter that we have now jumped to the year 1944, so things are comming to an end.. Also: I wonder about the ending of hes letter, if it's because of the cold weather or the large consumption of Vodka that makes him unable to write? I hope you enjoy this one.

Dear Parents!
I have received your letters from the 22.12.43 and from the 3.1.44. The air mail letter reached me very quickly, but alas still too late. The commander got to Germany with his injury on the second day of Christmas. That aside the pictures came out pretty well.
Now about your letter of the 22.1. Thank you, dear mother, for dealing with my present for Hanna so well. I don’t hold it against you by any means that you took it to her yourself, quite the opposite. You surely still know from the past that I had no secrets from you in that regard, and that I valued your judgement. A mother sees things like that quite differently, and can make a better judgement. People in love are mostly blind. If I get to come home on leave again one day we can talk about it. In any case, you do not have to worry that I will do anything stupid.
Well, as you say in your letter, things in Bremen are not looking too rosy. I guess I will cycle to Bremen next time. My friend Peter from Hannover found last time that he had to walk from Hildesheim to Hannover on foot.
I am generally quite well. My car has got to Germany and I am with the maintenance squadron. There is a lot of work here, and to work outside in this weather is not exactly fun. I always have a bottle of vodka in my pocket, and therefore it has not been possible to write for five days now.
Dear parents, I close now with warmest regards.
Heil Hitler!
Günter.

Re: The story of SS Rottenführer Günter Prange
Interesting letter! Hanna was, at the time, a popular name and quite often a Jewish one! This could well explain his strange reference about his mother and "no secrets in that regard". An SS Corporal and a Jewish girlfriend?

Feldpost 33 - East, 8.2.44
Dear Parents!
I received your letter from the 1.1.44 and was very pleased. I also received Papa’s letter from the 26.12.43. Thank you very much. Today I received yet another letter from the 18.1. In the meantime I have got another parcel, so that altogether I now have 2 parcels from Hasch, and 2 parcels from you. Hanna, too, has written in the meantime regarding her Christmas present. She was enormously pleased. Dear parents, please don’t take it badly that I write so little, but believe me I am glad when I can lie down to sleep in the evenings. The amount of work we achieve here beggars description.
Other than that I am generally quite well. I have learned a lot again recently. Things are getting pretty serious regarding reading in ‘bed’. Not an evening goes by when I don’t pore over my specialist textbooks, or devour some other reading matter until 11 o’clock. Now and then it has even got to 1:00. I get up again at 6:00, and from 7:00 til at least 19:00 there is work to do.
Dear parents, I close for now with warmest regards.
Heil Hitler!
Günter

Re: The story of SS Rottenführer Günter Prange
What a great read, thanks so much for posting. How good would it be to also get hold of his family letters to him and photos he took.
Anyone have a picture of what he looked like. I googled his name and couldnt find a picture
