    Dear Parents!

I send you best Sunday greetings from M……. . I am generally quite well. I suppose no post will get to me here for some time, as the company is still stationed at the front near D. I am at the Vehicle Repair Park ( H.K.P.1) with my car but it doesn’t matter as we are used to trouble. Otherwise I don’t know any news.

How do things look at home? What is Peter doing? Will he move up a year at Easter? –

I hope some post will reach you again soon.

    Heil Hitler!

    Günter

I'm away for 3 days and will be unable to update this thread because I do not have the pictures or textes here. Will update as soon as I get back (saturday probably).

I would like to extend my Thanks to Moderator Bill T for taking hes time and energy to update EVERY SINGLE photo in this thread with copyright watermark. What a good guy! Thanks!

Would also like to remind everyone to please do not copy the letters (Texts or pictures) as I am using them for a project that would be useless if they are spread all over the internet. So in order for me to continue sharing the letters, please leave them here on the forums where you can enjoy them anytime you want.

    Merry christmas wishes from Sweden

    Dear Parents!

Send you best wishes. I am still well. Unfortunately I have received no post again. It looks bad here for cigarettes. Apart from that it is bearable.

    Heil Hitler!

    Your Günter

The brevity of these later message leads me to think that Gunter had many more serious issues on his mind at the time and couldn't devote much time to creating longer communications. Perhaps there was a lack of good things to tell his parents so the less said the better?

Just was what I was thinking! Just to think that he was 19 years old when he were sent out in the war in the east...

    Dear Parents!

I send you best regards. I am still very well. Have received two letters from you, and one from Hans-Peter. I was very pleased. Unfortunately the post is always on its way for such a terribly long time. You ask me if I sent the letter from 10th Dec along with somebody. A platoon leader went on leave to Germany from here. He took the company post with him.

Did I enlist? No, I did not sign any contract. I am therefore a war volunteer. I can be released after the end of the war.

You will probably have noticed that I can manage with my money. There is nothing much to buy here. One buys cigarettes, tobacco, stationery and suchlike.

I want to close now. I will be in touch again in the next few days.

    Heil Hitler!

    Günter

The reference will definately be to Taganrog , the LAH spent the first winter in Russia in defensive positions on the North east shore of the Sea of Azov , this young fella had already seen much fighting up to now but soon at the beginning of June he should be heading to Normandy for rest and refit in the areas they subsequently fought in in 1944.

Having had to pay for all my German veteran letter translations until i learnt sufficient German to understand it myself i know the cost involved , i can only commend you on this continuing project !!

    Dear Parents!

I received your letter from the 19.2 today and was very pleased. I am at the Vehicle Repair Park (H.K.P.1)in M.at the moment. It is hard work here. Our vehicles are being thoroughly overhauled for the upcoming advance. We work almost independently. I understand the job better than the mechanic assigned to me. We live in a barrack. We have electric light and radio. The latter plays constantly, day and night. Every 14 days we see a film. Other than that we lie in our beds after work until 2 or 3 at night and read all things possible and impossible. By the way, I would be happy if you could send me an exercise- or specialist textbook about mechanics some time. I also need writing paper, flints and a tobacco pipe. Because my pipe is falling apart. Moreover my fountain pen has gone missing.

You ask how we communicate with the Russians. We have learnt enough Russian by now to be able to talk to them to some extent. You wrote so much about holidays in your last letters. I do not want to hurt you. But please don’t entertain any false hopes. In my estimation we cannot expect any leave before the end of the Russian campaign. You ask about the origin of the portable gramophone. It is Russian, as are the records.

A few days ago we had a concert evening. The band of the Bodyguard Regiment2 performed in support of the W.H.W.3 . It raised 1480RM.

I want to close now, and send you the warmest regards.

    Heil Hitler!

    Your Günter
