Last week, I watched Downfall (amazing film), and it got me thinking about an alternative history!

If the Nazis had somehow managed to drive back the Allies from Germany, and then negotiated peace, would Adolf Hitler have remained in power?

I know this was a highly unlikely scenario, and nothing but ultimate surrender was considered acceptable, but hypertheticaly, could Hitler have survived, or would the German Generals have removed him from power?

It would be interesting to hear other peoples opinions.

I think if Hitler had won the war on eastern front, Then I don't think there had ben a D-Day in Normandy. And he woud had going for the rest of the world, he woud had the resorses to make he's 1000 years Imperium. I dont think He had any thoughts of peace. So I'm preaty happy he diden't.

if hitler had got rid of the allies in germany, I think he would of tried to make piece with russia and team up and attack britan from the skies again.

That's my thoughts exactly. Obviously Hitler completely lost the plot, calling in poor tactical orders, and losing a grip on the reality and severity of the situations at hand. I doubt it would have been a coup against National Socialism (as Valkyrie was), but simply against it's leadership.

In 1945 he was a dead man walking,I doubt he would have lasted 6 weeks longer.

If Hitler had taken Britain in 1940 and Russia in 1942 and the Japanese had taken control of the Far East I dont think he would have lost the plot and he would have remained in power for a long time

The novel 'Fatherland' postulated Germany defeating Britain in 1940 and still fighting on the Russian front in the mid 1960s as a stalemate with an aged Hitler still in power (the movie version had a defeat of the 6 June 1944 landings as the turning point but of course by then nothing would have stopped the Soviets rolling over the whole of Europe). However the nature of the political system under the Nazis meant that a weakened Hitler would have been replaced by some newer up 'n coming ruthless thug-the chaos and rivalry that he liked to use as a tool for control would have led to this.

I think in one way or another he would have been removed. By the end of the war so many men and young boys were fighting with
only one thing in mind ... to save each other and stay alive and not some great cause they saw slipping away.
With that in mind there would probably have been some reluctance in the ranks if they were ordered to hop right back in and conquer
another country just because it was some ones idea. Generals can't run a army of disgruntled soldiers so change would need to come.

Only problem is there would remain a sizable basket of bad apples to carry on and one never knows if the new devil may not be worse
    than the one you had.

I doubt very much that Stalin would have allowed Hitler to sue for peace , not after Stalingrad, there wasnt enough room for two dictatorships in the European theatre, also Mussolini would have still been removed by his countrymen, therefore Germany would have run out of Allies, resources and by that time competant Generals, The way of the war may have been longer but America would have still committed itself to the complete surrender of all hostile forces as we would have, also any subsequent takeover by the remaining leaders would have resuted in another disaster, Himmler had no idea about tactics or military planning, Goering by this time was in the land of the fairies, Doenitz was really the only competant person to lead the country, but i think even he would realise that Germany had by that time lost too much and to continue a fight against Russia would result in wholesale slaughter, although there were a few very experienced Army generals, there hands would have been tied as before, especially if the SS or Luftwaffe were in control and indeed the Kriegsmarine
