What war history related museum to see in Russia? - List of museums/sources (answer)
Dear All,
I am asked this question often by my friends that are traveling to Russian and would like to see museums related to militarily history. Thought it will be helpful to list it here as well for the reference (especially now that it is summer and a lot of people are traveling).
In and near Moscow:
1) Kubinka tank museum (unfortunately there is not much on the internet in English, but its really one of best of its kind in the world), you can see there pretty much every tank that was built around the world (incl. German Mouse Super Heavy Tank, Sturmtiger, Ferdinant and many experimental tanks like Kugelpanzer)
3) Central museum of the Soviet/Russian army. Here you can see many unique items like KV-2 (only one surviving), sniper rifle of Lyudmila Pavlyuchenko, standards of German divisions that were thrown at the mausoleum (icl. standard AH), Reichsadler from Reichstag, orders and awards of Soviet marshals (icl. Zhukov), personal items of Field marshal Paulus, personal items of the "Night Witches"
4) Museum of modern history of Russia has a very good overview of the general historic events and war history in particular (personally I like the civil war section with original tachanka)
6) Museum of blockade of Leningrad (again not much info in English...), here you can find the the famous 125 grams of bread (day ration for the inhabitants) and The diary of Tanya Savicheva, a girl of 11, her notes about starvation and deaths of her sister, then grandmother, then brother, then uncle, then another uncle, then mother. The last three notes say "Savichevs died", "Everyone died" and "Only Tanya is left." She died of progressive dystrophy shortly after the siege. Her diary was shown at the Nuremberg trials
7) Navy Museum - has just finished its full reconstruction and has a very nice collection of Navy related items starting from Peter the Great until the most recent times (including an early soviet airplane and Varyag and Kriegsmarine relics)
11) Prokhorovka field near Kursk and around (museum of the battle with a nice outside area full of relics found nearby, the fields, Rotmistrov HQ, Tottenkopf beachhead, war cemeteries etc.)

Yes, that one is really great I heard. There is new private museum under construction on the Siege of Leningrad that will contain a lot of finds from the area, it promises to be really interesting as well.
I will add more photos here when it will be launched.
You must go to this museum, you will not be disappointed. It is run by collectors for collectors in honour of the Veterans.
Thinking of coming back to Moscow next month. There is a big battle re-enactment being run by my friend. Looking at the cost of flights now.
Cheers, Ade
