It is a very nobel sentiment, but sadly not really possible. If his service record still exists, which is a lottery, as most were destroyed in 1940 in an air raid, that would only give his next of kin and address of the time. It would cost you a lot of money to find this info. You can download his medal index card from the National Archives for £2.00. This will tell you if he was ever awarded any other medals. Chances are he was and this is just part of a broken up group.
As the medal was once sold, the chances are the family never valued them.
As you sound like true Gent, how about this as a suggestion if you don't want to keep the medal. Why not sell the medal and then donate the cash to the British Legion or the Help for Heroes Charity? It won't make a huge amount, maybe £10, but would still be a good return on your investment.
