Picked this oldie up recently. The old guy is missing one prong but still in really nice condition with an interesting belt catch.
Cheers.

Great looking buckle that goes on a dress belt. A much more detailed crown than on a standard Prussian buckle.
Thanks guys, seller had it tagged as a Navy item.
A very nice buckle!
On the subject of colonial buckles, does anyone here have one of the type that is supposedly attributed to the Imperial German colonies in China? They are German made and depict a Chinese dragon on the roundel. Some suggest they were for colonials while others say they were made on contract for China.
Hi Erno
That's a very interesting private purchase "patent" buckle. Would agree that Imperial navy is unlikely as the belt and buckle were not part of "walking out" dress so there cannot have been any incentive for sailors to buy their own. Could be colonial Schutztruppen, Seebataillone, or Gendarmeriebrigade (police) Reichsland Elsaß-Lothringen, who all also had buckles with the Imperial crown. Regarding the dragon buckle, consensus of opnion is that these were manufactured in Germany for Chinese military or police, not for police in the German colonial territories. Much more research into German colonial police forces needs to be undertaken, but there is no indication (regulations, contemporary photographs etc.) for a German colonial context for these buckles. I don't have one, but if you search the forums you will come up with several posted.
Kind regards
Kurt
Very interesting buckle!....
I just pull up a thread on the dancing dragon buckle Erno was asking about.
Thanks Kirby, and no worries Erno, this is all very interesting!
