In the same manner you would for an SS cap or any cap with a tradition badge added. Careful examination. I would expect to see original holes, trace out line of the exact skull, interior evidence of the exact prongs, verdigris transfer, etc etc etc. Of course there is no way to 100% know but one can be quite comfortable making the plunge if one knows what to look for.
