I think that is more likely the Austrian 5. Chevau-Legeres (Light Dragoons). It definitely is not German as evidenced by the name of the then commander, Archduke Albrecht of Austria (Erzherzog Albrecht von Oesterich), which I think refers to Erzherzog Albrecht Friedrich Rudolf Dominik von Östereich (1817-1885) That is a nice sword to have, I envy you. Good bit of research by Dwight. Could we have an image of the royal cypher on the hand guard. A two headed eagle would confirm Austrian, which seems likely.

Although its honorary commander/Colonel-in-Chief and namesake was an Austrian Archduke, it was still a Bavarian regiment:

Koniglich Bayerisches 5. Chevaulegers-Regiment „Erzherzog Friedrich von Osterreich“ – Wikipedia

(It was "Erzherzog Albrecht von Österreich" from 1886 to 1895, then "Erzherzog Friedrich von Österreich" from 1909 on.)

Austria had stopped using the designation "Chevaulegers" in 1851, when its Chevauleger regiments were re-organized as Uhlans and Dragoons.
