    Default 1914 Miners Pocket Watch

    Hello Guys,

Not sure if "Miners Association" is the correct name, but I do know the double hammers has to do with mining.

I saw this for auction, and I quite like it.

Could I ask for your thoughts before I follow it relentlessly and bid?

I am not sure if it still works, I doubt it.

    Thanks, Patrick

    Hi Pat.

Looks like a Swiss made, 7 to 9 jewel watch, but I can't
make out the logo. The case is where the value lies
    - engraving is period and it's marked 800 silver.
The chain could be more recent.

The repaired damage on the face between 7 and 8
affects the value quite a lot. $50-$100 max IMO,
if you really have to have it - you don't know
if it's running well or not. Don't go crazy.

You could always find a nicer running
    movement.........
    Regards,

    Steve.

Thanks Steve, I knew you'd be able to help,

If I ended up buying it and if the movement was saveable I would change the face to a nicer one and wear it. I love the engraving,.

So far the bidding is at 1euro. ends Sunday.

If anyone can make out what the engraving says I would appreciate it greatly.

The engravings tell us that the watch was presentend by the salt mining corporation of Halle an der Saale in Saxony-Anhalt for faithful services rendered from 8th July 1889 to 8th July 1914; so it was given to a miner or other employee on the occasion of his 25th anniversary with the firm.

That's very interesting, thank you very much.

He received it so close to the outbreak of the First World War.

I read the description again and found out the watch is indeed working! Which is great.

Harry- I wasn't planning on going over 100. I need to replace the face and perhaps get a better chain if I bought it.

Just to show here is my pocket watch collection. Two are silver. I can't get into the working of the engraved one.

    Hi Patrick

Steve has said most of what needs to be said. IMHO I'd say that the chain is indeed somewhat later than the watch and to be honest I don't really like it, but that's just a matter of personal preference.

The case is rather nice, but the makers mark is not one that I've come across before.

You may wish to try: Object moved - it's a rather good Horology Forum.

If it was me and I bought it, I'd keep the face as is, despite the blemish which is indeed unfortunate...in fact whoever attempted to 'fix' it rather made it worse.

If you do manage to purchase it, I would strongly suggest that you get the mechanism professionally cleaned - it shouldn't cost a lot and will assist in replacing any springs and gears, etc that may be in need of doing so, thus prolonging it's life.

    Cheers
    Tim

Unfortunately, with a day left it has gone up far past my limit. Oh well, it is certainly a very nice watch.
