I've been meaning to properly photograph this one for a while. It was among the bring back items of Captain James Havelock Johnston 82nd Co 3rd Bn 6th Marines, who was awarded the Silver Star twice within days of each other during early October 1918 at the battle of Mont Blanc. I've reasearch him thoroughly and did an extensive write up over on GHW2 some time ago. He was quite an impressive individual and I can post a link research/write up if anyone is interested. As always, any and all comments or opinions are appreciated.

It is a BGB66 with an Ersatz liner, it is named to FAUR under a pad.

Very nice looking helmet and a wonderful grouping.
It's great to know that much history behind a piece.

Thanks Greg, I appreciate the comment. For me, collecting is all about history and I try preserve as much of it I can.

I may do a thread on Capt Johnston here, his story is nothing short amazing.

Austrian camo's are as rare as hen's teeth and this one is the best that I have ever seen. The provenance throws it over the top! Please post the link as I am sure many would love to read about the hero that brought this one back. Thanks for posting this one, Jim G.

John, I don't know how many WW1 camos have retained their provenance but I know it's extremely rare. To have not just the provenance but an entire grouping from a soldier is fascinating and quite honestly mind-blowing. One of the best WW1 camos on its own, bit add in the provenance and this has to be one of the top 2-3 WW1 camos on the planet.

Love the helmet... amazing patina and color scheme! And, like you said, it's all about the history... which is what makes researchable items so fantastically intriguing!

That is a fantastic looking M17 camo. I also would like to see what you wrote up about that Devil Dog. I bing'ed his name and see that there is a post on USMF in the Medals decorations section ,but the site is down right now. Is that your grouping being spoken about?
    Wanted to add,
I was just able to get on USMF and it seems that is not your collection of this Gent's of medals but you know of each other and he wants your grouping!!!!!

Thank you gentlemen, I very much appreciate all the great the comments.

Researching and piecing together the history and provenance of individuals and their associated items is the "juice" for me so to speak, and is why I participate in this hobby.

For those interested - Here is a link to the GHW2 research thread.

There is also a thread on the US forum by a very talented individual and researcher, with a great passion for USMC history. We discovered each other a few years ago and have had quite a few interesting conversations.
