Authentic or Fake - EK 1 WWI

Article about: TJ, If you study the details (crown, date, frame) between your cross and my KO cross (the one on red that you posted), you will see that nothing at all matches between them.

    TJ,
You really need to get some reference material if you are going to buy items without posting them first. That being said, I have been seriously collecting for about 6 years and I still cannot tell the difference in most EK's without searching and doing some research first. As an example, Greg even said that this one fooled him at first and he is quite knowledgeable in this field. If you are going to seriously collect EK's then you need to buy one or two, (at the least) books. Either that or you need to find yourself some reliable, reputable dealers to frequent that will offer refunds if the items turn out to be bad, not Snyder's Treasures. Also, you can find items here in the classifieds that would increase your chances of obtaining original items for your collection.
    Hope this helps,
    Ralph.

    Ralph,

I did buy some reference books, but they are not much help. I'm sure you have seen what badges and dedals i have. When do do get a chance could you please recommend some good reference books?

    Thanks

    OK,
This may take a while. I've got other things going on today.

    TJ,
The very first thing to catch my eye about your cross that
caused me to take a second look was the reverse hardware.
To my knowledge ther are no known originals to have a hinge
block to match yours.(it is way too big).

Also there are several known fakes that use a flat wire catch.
Not a total indication of a fake by itself but it's something that
    warrants a second look.

There are others on this forum who's librarys far exceed my own that would be more than happy to help you out. I suggest you go to the discussions forum and post a thread asking for help in finding out what books other members recommend. I am sure that you will get lots of answers. Some may even answer you here.

After seeing the red flags on the reverse, I took a closer look at the front.
The core details. This core is very, very good. As good as any original.
However. The date caught my eye. The sans serif style 9 is something
that is not often seen in ww1 crosses.

The other thing is the crown detail. This crown is exceptionally well
detailed and matches very closely to known original styles.
That level of detail is a good thing. It allows us to study every
    little bump. dot or detail.

Those core details alone allow me to compare your cross
    against known fakes.

You mentioned the "oxidation" on your cross.
That is another give away. That even dull grey finish
is meant to replicate the natural patina that forms
silver. At a glance it looks close but it's just not right.

The combination of the fake patina, the fact that the hardware is
wrong and that the date and crown match known fakes. Also
certain details on the frame which also match known fakes
can only lead to one conclusion.

If you take the time to really study the smallest details
between your cross and the two that I posted, you will
begin to see what I am talking about.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Greg. I did not care for the hardware but the core detail was so good I thought it had a chance.

The core detail is really good. Like I said earlier, better
than even some originals. I had to ask for help on this
    one.

I agree with Roger, hence my comment liking the details and that it stood a chance of being original.
