That's a very nice example in what seems to be a premium quality case.
This medal was also my 2nd imperial medal after an EKII and is from the period when Germany was a federation of states or principalities and kingdoms etc rather than a sovereign nation and all were issuing there own medals before the Prussian Eisernes Kreuz became pre-eminent.
The baseis of this award is as the highest (group of awards) for bravery of the Bavarian State and rated equivalent to the EK which was awarded to the enlisted ranks.
It originated in 1866 as the single class Militaer Verdienstkreuz but went through numerous amendments and changes until by 1913 there were three classes (1st, 2nd and 3rd) to which could be added swords and crown. So, by my reckoning this makes 12 permutations. Add to that the award of the same medal to "Beamten" (officials) with a different ribbon and the number of possibilities doubles (this one could be a collection on it's own!).
Of course many recipients of this medal were still around for the "replay" in 1939 but just three that might interest many of us here are; Adolf Hitler and Sepp Dietrich awarded the 3rd clas with swords and Heinrich (Gestapo) Muller awarded 2nd class with swords.
It is a very good looking medal and the crown especially drew my eye. It is a three dimensional hollow piece that looks at first glance like filligree work but is actually a cast piece.
Here is mine for comparison plus the ribbon for the medal to Beamten.

Mark
Ribbon for Beamten
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing he cares more about than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature with no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
Good looking cross.
Congrats Darren on a nice find.

I was addicted to the "Hokey-Pokey" but I've turned
myself around.
A real Beauty to behold.
