I've never seen one before but I am guessing it is just a patriotic piece.--

The medal used is the Bavarian Militarverdienstkreuz...A patriotic piece with lots of character!

The Bavarian MVK/swords was the Bavarian equivalent to the Prussian Iron cross.
I would imagine a loyal Bavarian would be much more proud of his awarded national
cross than the Ek. In fact, I have seen many medal bars in which the MVK is
mounted in front of the Ek2.

Rory, Greg is correct, the simple answer is...that in Bavaria, in many soldiers minds this Bavarian award (MVK) was held to be higher than a "Prussian" award (i.e. the EK).
This is often found on Bavarian medal bars takes preference over the Iron Cross, that is, being placed first on the bar (see photograph of such a bar in my collection) ......so it is quite feasible that the MVK was considered more patriotic in that part of Germany.
    Prost ! Steve.
