About my only serious concern, is why is there an extra hole beneath the rear rail up near the spike? You can clearly see it from the inside. How is the rear rail secured? Has it been replaced?

If it comes from Belgium it must be ok! ;-)
Just kidding!!
No problem with that hole, that is something you get to see often on spike helmets. If it is a "extra" hole!! It could very well be that the split pen of the rear reinforcement crest broke of...
And no problem with the helmet eighter! Good shape and general conservation. If it evers come for sale or trade, please informe me!

Can anyone make out the names?
If you wet the area, it will show clearly what is written.
Don't rub, but punch(gently!!! I don't know the exact word!!)with a moisted cloth or soft brush, the marked area.
Here is a example on one of mine;Pickelhaubes.Com • View topic - ID marks on a 1915 haube.

i tried and it worked for a second, but then it soaked in and made dark patches
Yes it disapears quiet quickly, the dark patche goe's as well!
It's leather, so, of course, it will darken abit when wetted, but as Kris said, it will lighten again when the leather dries. Just gently daub it with a cotton ball or soft wet cloth and it should raise the writing-but, as said, do Not rub it!
