Bizarre M16/17 with face cage

Article about: G'day, I have no info and where or when this helmet came from, it was posted on a FB page I'm a member of.... Has anyone seen such a thing before? Thankyou in advance.

    We've thrown around all sorts of "theories".... Wicket keepers helmet, a mount for really early Night vision....even a bayonet fencing mask

    Gladiator helmet

    Whatever is is its not only the cage, but looks like the brim was cut back and the lugs changed as well

    Your right there, the whole lid has been modified....but I can't see any advantage to a soldier wearing this, a sniper would find it difficult to aim in the prone or even crouching position, it would restrict your head movement......could it be a post war modified shell by a farmer? But again, what for

    Soldiers fighing helmet for after a few to many drinks they can have a little biffo with each other

    Just a guess but perhaps some sort of training aid-the mesh barrier is not capable of stopping anything that could do damage on a battlefield but a fair deal of work's been done on it-practicing hand to hand combat with clubs, maces etc ?

    Could well be, but it's got me scratching my head....it's almost medieval
