tailor marc: Thanks for posting the newspaper clippings. The one about Capt. John Thompson aka "Deutschland Johnson" is one of my favorites. I have the same copy that appeared in the New York Times in October 1918. It's a priceless example of the silliness the press printed about the Deutschland throughout her short career. The inaccuracies in the article are so glaring as to be laughable, though the fact is that at the time few if any readers recognized them. The Deutschland/U-155 was never in the Mediterranean and on 24 October 1918 when the article was published she was alive and well in the North Atlantic headed home following the general recall issued to all U-boats at sea on 21 October 1918. Aboard the German submarine U-9 between 12 Jan 1915 - 19 Apr 1916 was Johannes Spieß or Spiess. He claims to have almost torpedoed the U-DEUTSCHLAND while the merchant freighter was on one of her shakedown cruises, and would have done so had Koenig's boat not signalled to the U-9, "We are German!".

Launched on 28 March, DEUTSCHLAND "was making a trial cruise upon orders of the Berlin Staff, which had not informed the front command at Wilhemshaven."

The account came from what was to have been Spieß' recently published book, "Six Years' Submarine Raids" (pre-1926)

Also, there may be an account of the incident in the following:

"Four Years of Underwater Cruising" by Johannes Spiess. Weddigen's watch officer. Later became U-boat commander. Present at the mutinies. English Translation by Adm. Hyman Rickover, USN.

From an article printed on page six of the daily Norwalk Hour, February 24th 1925

The event St. Baltimore described above occurred on 27 May 1917 as the U-155 (KptLt. Karl Meusel) was outbound on her first war patrol in approximately 59.18 N 04.53 E off the Norwegian island Utsira near Haugesund. The Körting engine boat U-19 was returning from a 24-day war patrol between the Shetlands and Norway. Oblt z.S. Johannes Spiess was about to make a submerged torpedo attack and was on the threshold of firing a stern shot when he saw that the gun tubes on the U-155 were painted black, at that time a universal characteristic for all German U-boats. He had his war pilot and first officer examine the boat through the attack periscope and both confirmed it was a Deutschland-class submarine. The U-155 was at the time operating on one engine, the other being out of service after shedding an exhaust valve. At the time the sea was calm, with moderate sea mist, visibility five miles. The reason that the U-155 was continuing toward her patrol area southeast of the Azores on one engine is because Meusel refused to turn back, figuring that the lame engine could be torn down and rebuilt using the skill of his engineering staff and the resources provided by a complete machine shop, including a 6" lathe, aboard the U-155. The engine was back online on 30 May. Dwight

    Ahoy Howie,

You, your family, your friends, and others who contribute to this thread effort, are invited to a gathering as guests of the Baltimore & Chesapeake Steamboat Company this Sunday afternoon between Noon and 4 pm, September 15, 2013.

As part of its annual recognition of maritime pioneers, the Baltimore & Chesapeake Steamboat Company (B&CSC) will be sponsoring an invitation-only memorial gathering at the Port of Baltimore for U-DEUTSCHLAND's Captain Paul Lebrecht Koenig.

This will be an 80th anniversary observance of Captain Koenig's passing which occurred on September 8, 1933. The German Society of Maryland, founded in 1783, is co-sponsoring the event, with the Baltimore & Chesapeake Steamboat Company.

The observance will be held rain-or-shine and is being hosted aboard the World's first nuclear-powered merchant ship SAVANNAH. This vessel is 596 feet in length, was designed as part of President Eisenhower's "Atoms For Peace" initiative, and was built to carry both passengers and freight.

The Dockenspielers of York Pennsylvania will be providing a memorial concert.

A view of the anchorage where the crew of the World's first merchant submarine first dropped her hook in American waters will be offered during the memorial concert and service.

Baltimore is believed to have been one of only two cities outside of Germany that observed Koenig's death. The other city, also in the United States, was New York City.

Those interested in attending this special September 15th remembrance are asked to contact the B&CSC at: hawseline@gmail.com by Friday, September 13th giving the names of those who anticipate attending. Seating may be limited so plan to arrive early.

There is no charge to board SAVANNAH for the memorial service and free parking is available on the pier. The vessel is not handicapped accessible, Please wear low-heeled closed-toed shoes.

SAVANNAH begins boarding at Noon with a single tour of the ship's interior spaces beginning at one o'clock sharp. The memorial service begins at two-thirty and participants disembark at four o'clock.

Hope to see you this coming Sunday afternoon.

I want to thank the Baltimore & Chesapeake Steamboat Co., the German Society of Maryland, and the Dockenspielers for providing a very lovely afternoon aboard the NS Savannah in honor of the U-Deutschland and rememberance of Captain Konig and his crew. Walt gave a very informative and enjoyable tour of the Savannah, and as the grandson of one of the crew members I found the program in honor of the U-Deutschland was very moving. I thank all involved for providing such a nice tribute.
