You found that in a dump !

That is a German S98-05 first pattern bayonet - standard German WW1 bayonet.

There might be a date on the back of the blade - 15 or 16 perhaps ?

Good looking bayonet - the leather scabbard has shrunk which is why the bayonet does not go all the way in.

    Regards

    Very nice find.
That would look good next to my ww1 Iron Cross display.

Excellent find! Also the bayonet frog and troddel is a nice bonus!
It's a S98/05aA bayonet, or first model "Butchersknife" as it's called unofficially... You can find the year of production on the back of the blade. The S98/05 aA was produced from 1905 till 1915.
Between the S98/05 aA and the S98/05 nA They also produced a few transitional models during a short period. The difference between the S98/05 aA and the S98/05 nA is easy to spot... The aA has no Shutzblech to protect the grips against the muzzle flash and has the long "ears" (half muzzlering). The S98/05 nA models have a Schutzblech and short "ears".
From 1915 on the scabbard was also produced completely in steel, instead of the weaker leather ones like yours.
S98/05 aA = Seitengewehr model 1898/1905 alter Art = bayonet model 1898/1905 old type
S98/05 nA = Seitengewehr model 1898/1905 neuer Art = bayonet model 1898/1905 new type

Trivia: Before the S98/05 nA was introduced, the plain back version was identified as the S98/05 or S98/05 o.S. (ohne Säge - without saw) and the saw back as the S98/05 S or S98/05 m.S. (mit Säge - with saw).

I hope this can help you in some way...
