Default The exception to the rule

For years I have been telling people to never buy 2nd class 1870 Eks that
are maker marked. Fake 1870 Ek2s show up a lot with bogus marked rings from
common 1914 makers like KO, S-W and Godet. I would always say that there
is no such thing as a real maker marked 1870 while at the same time being fully
aware that one does exist. It is just so rare that they are never seen. In all of the
years that I have been hanging around the various forums, I have only seen two
posted and have been told of another that was never posted on a forum. ( I'm not
saying that those are the only ones, Just an example of how rare they are)

These crosses are marked LL . One book lists the maker as L.Lauer and another book
claims it to be Louis Lemcke. No one really knows for sure.

-Any way, I saw an interesting cross listed on ebay with some really poor pictures
and thought I would take a chance. This is what arrived in the mail.

A 3/4 sized Prinzen 1870 marked with the Lauer? mark. It measures 34.8 X 34.9mm
and came with a piece of original ribbon. This is one rare bird and I am absolutely thrilled
    to have found it.

Congrats on acquiring this lovely and rare cross Greg!
I am guessing that since you decided to "take a chance" you got it for a good price?

Fantastic ! Thank God for poor pictures and descriptions on ebay, sometimes that is the key to a major score.

Yes I did. I'm not much of a gambling man but from the pictures I could see that it
looked like a good 1870. I took a guess at it being a Prinzen and the maker's mark
was a very happy surprise. PLUS I was able to get it for half what a normal 1870
    normally goes for.
