There are too many fakes during collecting EKs. In this March, from the same seller, I bought two EKs at the second hand market in Stuttgart. One is EK I 1914, J.H.Werner Berlin and the other is EK I 1939 with maker mark "51" at the pin. The seller promised both the crosses were from the veteran... Palapalapala
But one of my friends in Berlin told me that the EK I 1939 maker mark 51 is a " piece of shit " while the the EK I 1914 is a rare version.
Anyway, it is still long way for hobby.
If you post them in the 1939 Eisernes Kreuz forum you will get some informed and genuine opinions of your crosses.

It is true that fakes of the EK do exist but on the whole they are easy to spot and mistakes are easily avoided by knowing a few background facts and conducting basic research first, such as which manufacturers actually made EKs.

The other thing to consider is never to take the 'sellers' word for it. He just wants to make money and many sellers will tell you anything to achieve this. Evaluate the item, not the seller's story. The first rule of collecting!

Post them up and let's see what you have.

    Hello Adria,
I agree with you that the background knowledge is really necessary before start collecting EKs.
For sure, I will post the photoes of my small group of EKs for discussion within this week.
    I really need some help.
    Mit freundlichen Grüssen,
    Wolfgang

I look forward to seeing your pieces. A few of us here have achieved your plan of collecting all makers of the EK2 and there are many others very well placed to offer you advice.

In my opinion an original Schuarte & Hoehfeld TR produced EK1.

Compare to the example shown here.
Adrian thanks for the link! I see your point it's tough to make out the mark on the reverse because of the poor quality photo. Feel better about it

I agree that this is a desirable original cross...the second set of photos were much better, thanks.

I would guess the same price as a screwback Third Reich EK1 from the same maker.

Ok thanks Adrian! I am looking at this in a collection for sale. There are a few fakes in the lot and some authentic items that is why I asked. So the verdict is authentic on the ww1 EK.
    Thanks,
    Anzel

I do not have a clue if this is a good one or not.
Stefans files which Adrian linked to seems to be
    spot on.

I do know that the fakes of this style are really really
good, as we found out with a cross Marc posted a few
weeks back. I don't have enough experiance with this
one to give any kind of good opinion so I will leave this
one for someone who knows more than I.

Sorry I could not be of more help.
