Article about: Excellent EKs you have there Chopperman. Can you tell me more info about this one?

    My latest treasure.
Found yesterday at a military show in St. Paul.

A brass framed cross made by AWS. This one is a wideframe and has
the 1st type iron core used by that maker. The pin has been broken and replaced
with a wire bent is such a way that it gives spring tension on the catch.

    Very nice Greg!
It seems to have less detail in the crown that the iron cored example.
Even though the pin is replaced, it shows some thought was put into it.

I agree. The crown details are kind of soft. Part of that is due to some
wear to the high points but over all, I think the first type crown just lacks the
    detail of the later one.

A few months back I picked up an EK2 that had a "closed 4" in the '1914'. It was an example I hadn't seen before and after doing my homework, found that it was a relatively scarce variant (considering the number of EK2s that were awarded). I also read that it was believed that the manufacturer was Klein & Quenzer who, during WW1 had the maker mark 'KO'.

This week, I tracked down another "closed 4" EK2 and this time it was maker marked, indeed, with 'KO'

Even though KO EK2s are abundant by the tens of thousands no doubt, it is still great to find a marked version to back up what I had read.

    Cheers

    Jamie,
    Nice pick up
That is indeed a very scarce cross. I can count the number of those that I have
ever seen posted on one hand. Thanks for posting it for us.

Hi Chaps, here's my 'closed 4' EK1. The blued core originally had paint as you can see the remains of some in the detail of the crown. The frame, back plate & pin seem to be made of nickle silver instead of silver. There are no maker marks,

    Cheers,

    Richard.

    Richard,
That is a very nice looking "Zimmerman" made cross.
Easy to identify from the style of crown and the duckbill looking pin.
