    Hey greg,

do you have any idea what the reasoning behind the pillow backed cross is? It seems like it was probably a pain to fabricate, and it doesnt look like a stamping process to me. Any insight why this technique was used?

    Thanks,
    Jess

I think that all of the pillowback crosses I have seen can all
be attributed to one maker. (A. Werner & Sohne--Berlin).

As far as I know, it was just a matter of style.

    But I do have a theory-------Most early
Ek1 makers used a solid silver back. Pillowbacks are usually
not silver or a very thin sheet silver. It could be that the pillow
back design is a way to strengthen the back so it would not
bend if the cross were snagged on something.

Just a guess on my part.

I have never actually examined a pillow back in person. Are the "pillows" hollow or are they just additional sheets of silver over the backing?

    thanks,

I know a lot of people like those nice shiney, mint looking
crosses but I tend to like the ones that show their age and
have a sence of history about them.

This one just arrived this morning.

    It's a 1914 Ek1 marked "S-W" for Sy and Wagner.
It has a cracked core and a very nice blue patina to the frame.

My pictures don't do this one justice. Maybe it's time to get
the good camera out and update my collection pictures.

Hi Greg, very nice EK1 Plenty of character. I think the best thing about crosses with a bit of service is that the wear & dirt are near impossible to fake. A big bonus in this day & age, Cheers, Richard.

I was cleaning out my files and came across an old picture
that I did on one of those rainy, boreing afternoons.

The cross is brass framed with an iron core.

It's pillowback/screwback. made by AWS. unforunately it's not
makermarked and is missing the large backing plate.

I think I may have posted this one once before.
