    Tom,
Not a Meybauer. 99% sure it is a Deumer. Most I have come
across have had the typical coke bottle pin but these needle
pin versions have also been attributed Deumer.

    Nice cross.

Next is an SW. I like the catch design.
Hi Lee, looking at your S-W it looks like the hook has been replaced. Here's mine to compare. It was probably done after being damaged in use. A nice 'been there' touch, Cheers, Richard.

The last one, which you say might be Austrian has had a bit
of discussion lately over on a different forum. In Previtera's
"Iron Time" first edition he shows an example of this one(pg168)
and says that they are tought to be French made as propoganda
pieces. The Crown being a French Napoleonic crown.

Many people do not believe that to be true. Some believe this one
to be a post war souvenier. No one knows for sure.
Greg, Gentlemen,...as promised, I got to photograph 'Bowens' book, to me this is THE book to have, although not as 'glossy' or coffee table compatable as 'Iron Time', I find its narrative contents to be greater than both Previtiras and Williamsons (for novices) books. A difficult book to find. However, that said, the info on our 'mystery' cross is still vague, to say the least !....oh well, it will continue to evoke debate.

Chopperman you got me hooked by this thread! Here is my second EK2 1870 I just picked. Like I said Oradour, I picked up The Iron Time. The book you just posted by Vernon E Bowens is hard to find and when I found it, they wanted $350 bucks for it! Anyway, Im having a hard time understanding the difference between a Godet and a Wagner & Sohn and also different variants. Which is mine and why? I know you guys can school me. Thanks, Lee

    Lee,
Putting a maker to a early 1870 2nd class is almost
    impossible.

The core used in your cross was made at the Berlin foundery
before it was closed in 1873. This core style (the type A core)
was produced at the Berlin foundry and then sent to Wagner
and Godet and possibly others to be assembled in their frames.
So that means that these companies crosses are virtually identical.

There was some discussion on another forum about maybe being
able to identify the 1870 Godet frame. I don't remember if it was
for a 1st or 2nd class cross OR if it proved be be affective.----
I will do some searching to try and find the thread.

BTW-- That's a wonderful early 1870 in very very nice condition. Well done.

    Steve,
Thanks for posting the scan from Bowen's book. That book
has a lot of great information. The only issue I have with
relying too heavily on it is that it was printed 24 years ago
and we are still discovering new things.

I'm glad this thread has done some good. I joined this forum a year ago and was
blowen away by the lack of crosses posted in Imperial. Only a small handfull at best.
I posted my meager collection and have been honored to see others posting in it as well.

Here is a discussion on 1870 Godet frames.

Comparing frames on 1870 Godet Wideframe - Wehrmacht-Awards.com Militaria Forums

If your inner corners are still well defined this may tell you if
your cross is a Godet or not.

Steve-- Feel free to remove this link if need be.
