    Default 1914 Iron Cross

I inherited my collection of WW2 memorabilia about 5 years ago (some items earlier) from my grandfather. Each piece was directly brought back to the U.S. by my grandfather, at the end of the war.

This is the Iron Cross (I believe it is 1st class) from 1914. I couldn't quite identify which cross I have, due to the great variations of ways they were awarded, worn, modified, etc. (according to my research). The letters "KMST." are on the back, to the left of the clasp, and the letters "DRGM" are to the right. The clasp-bar has the number "800" in the center.

I'll try to take some more close-up pictures and post them tomorrow. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Gaines

    Hi Gaines,
That is a nice original cross. And one that is one of the harder to find makers.

It is indeed a 1st class cross. The KMST marking is the makers
mark. It is believed that KMST stands for "Kreigsministerium
Standesamt"---I'll let one of our German speaking friends
translate that. I believe the DRGM is basiclly short for what
would be in English "Patent applied for" There again I will defer
to our German speaking members. The 800 on the pin is the
silver content used in the frame.

This is a good looking, desireable cross and having it brought back
by your grandfather, I'm sure makes it more special to you. I would
be interested in seeing what else your grandfather brought home.

Greg, thanks for the info. As for the other items that my grandfather brought back, just check the other threads I've started.

    Thanks again,
    Gaines

I've probably posted this one before but as long as we are
looking at KMST marked crosses, I thought Gaines and some others might like this one----

Typical KMST front. Wide nicely vaulted, quality silver frame (also seen on Gaines' cross )

However the rear mounting system is a bit different.

Refered to as the slide hook attachment, or the "zipper back"
    cross.
