Yes, it is a closed '4'.

This is a cross I got off E-bay. It was listed as: '1914 crown cross medal' or something,
with 2 extremely blurry photos of the front and back, I knew what it was, and even
though it is not great condition-wise, I got it for a great price............!

This is a very early EKI made around the end of 1914/ beginning 1915; I can say this because the iron core is die cast !!
The craking are the caracteristic to die core, especially on EKI when the thikness is more fine than the EKII, during the WWI the technics of production evolving until to new production process, more fast and not expensive: blanking & bending tooling !!
On future will be the massive production.
These cross are the last ring of conjunction to the past with the die cast process, 1813 and 1870.
This mine is marked S-W on neddle and 2 on rear of the same, this 2 I think is probably a lot number or a serial number..... and the core not is painting but, I think, burnished.
I show you the dealer photos before the restorating, very light and I show you a pics also of the die cast production used to made EKI and EKII cores.

It lets me see what the back of mine should look like.
Mine is missing the large circular backing plate and the original wire
'handle' from the screw. It looks as though the plate was replaced
by an aluminum drawer knob ! The brass screw still has traces
of silver plating........
