Next up, another EK1. This time a convex version without a maker mark; but silver marked 800.

Hi Greg, I've had a look at Wehrmacht Awards.com WW1 EK database to try & I.D. the maker of my convex EK1 shown in 12 & 13. Looks like it could be a Deutsher Offiziers Verein -

Hi Richard,

It's impossible to say for sure from the pictures provided.
In the pictures, the crown detail and the frame beading detail
at the inner corners are hard to make out. The overall
appearance looks to be a good match. The dates and "W"s
are really close.

One thing I did notice is the "800" silver stamp on one is in
a box while on the other it is not.

Another thing to be aware of is the the DOF was not a manufacturer of crosses. From what I understand, it was an
organization whos members could order EKs through them. So
the real maker of DOF crosses is not known. Also--this was a
fairly generic core which seemed to be used by several makers.
To make it to a the DOF crosses, you need to mact the core
and the frame.

When I am trying to match up crosses, I will check the obvious
points (crown, date, W ) but I also check the way the beading
come together at the inner corners. Many crosses have very
unique patterns that are easy to check from cross to cross.

I know this didn't really answer your question but it might
give you something to think about.

Hi Greg, yeah I see what you mean. I've looked into the DOF & they seem to be like an officers club/retailer to buy their kit from. Not a maker. Saying that the screwback with the 800 is identical on the front to mine. The crown, W, 1914 are identical. The W has a slight incline in the middle at the top which is also identical to mine. Also the iron core is the same composition having small spots in the metal & the beading in the corners is the same. Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep on looking. All The Best, Richard.

Next a non maker marked EK2 with a tri-fold Austro Hungarian ribbon.

Just had a proper look & it's maker marked 'D' on the edge of the ring. Sadly an unknown maker

Heres three 2nd class Iron Cross's from my collection, on the bottom left, on a saxon bar, is an Assmann ('A') marked Imperial, bottom right another imperial, marked ' LW ' an unknown maker, i thought i'd throw in the Third Reich one (marked '120', Franz Petzl, Wein ) to show the size difference, sometimes not apprieciated when considering WW1/WW2.
