    Richard, thanks for showing the photo, (makes him look very sinister ! like a "Bond" villian !) I must confess that I dont much about this "Tradition"... and that I have no photographs to contribute to this thread, however I am under the impression that it was not a "military" custom, but more a student thing ! when sabre duelling ! if anyone can enlighten me on this peculiar German trait, I am all ears !

    Thanks for that Ned !....I knew it had been done in the main whilst at university and by a sabre as opposed to a foil ! a very informative link...

    Excellent link, both my photos seem to confirm the practice of having the left side of the face take the punishment. It all seems slightly bonkers, I'd prefer a small honourable nick to having half my face slashed. I would like to see some other photos.
