I too was under the impression that etched bayos such as this were considered fakes. Having said that I have only seen this with regard to Second World War K98 bayonets. I have never seen it on an M1898.

The fake WW2 98k bayonets were done in England in the 70s....

Bill....I must admit at first glance, I assumed "fake"....I remember very well the nasty TR fakes coming out in the 70's (some TR etched bayonets are genuine !).....However Imperial swords were etched as is this piece, so why not bayonets....the Imperial Army had parade bayonets that could not be used on a rifle, i.e. the attachment button was non working, fixed....(especially the M71/84 models)....I do not know enough, only the basics about bayonets & edged weapons to say yay or nay...but I think it might stand a chance......lets see if we have any members who specialise in this area....
    Prost ! Steve.

These personalized Bayonets are quite rare. I have examined one 98/05 with a beautiful etched blade and a few S98s. As I recall the S98s were all Navy marked to Einjahr Freiwillige like this one. As these one year volunteers had to pay all their own expenses and came from families with money it's not surprising that they would outfit themselves with an extraordinay walking-out bayonets.

I can not tell you if it's real or fake but I hope it's real.
It is a VERY impressive looking piece.
