ray, it is a reservists flask, and by the insignia upon it, for a reservist officer, two pips = Hauptmann (Captain) who served in '5 Westfalisches Infantrie-Regt Nr 53, part of the VII Armee Korps, garrisoned at Koln. After active service (service took place throughout the mans life between 17-45) men would become reservist. It is the reservist not the proffesionals who carried souvinirs such as pipes, steins, flasks, cups, swords, and many others. These types of souvinirs were available private purchase. Yours, im afraid, is not in pristine condition, it would of had a carry strap of woven colours red, white, and black, also it is probable that it was decorated with hand painted scenes of regimental life, to remind the owner of his service.

Doesn't appear for some reason, but I will work on that. Very interesting comments on the history of it. Thanks
