my mistake, not reserve - which is something I should have known had I bothered to give even an extra minutes consideration. That style of cartouche on a Wappen is not often encountered. I am curious about what it is all about.

Asterperious, what do the words Cartouche and Wappen correspond to please?

Wappen is the helmet plate.
Cartouche is the centre piece on the wappen.
If Steve or Adler comes along you will know it all in a minute, if not I 'll give you a answer tomorrow, I need my books.
But I think the main theory, about the Wappen is that it concerns foot and heavy artillery.

I am wrong !
It is Feld Artillerie Regiment 1 and 6.
The Wappen was also used by other branches of the army; hulans, pionier,jäger. But on a different configuration (different helmet etc..)

So are you saying the wappen and cartouche on MY helmet is (or at least MAY be) the Field Artilery Regiment 1 and 6?

Yes , the Wappen with cartouche would be Field Artilery Regiment 1 or 6.

Hmmm... looking at the helmet plate only, I would say that it's a Model 1894 pickelhaube for Mannschaften of the Fuss Artillerie Regt. Nr. 1 - 2 - 3 - 6...
However, normally artillery helmets have no ventilation at the back spine, but also exceptions do exist... They are beleived to be of the latest productions with brass fittings before the M15 models were produced...
The Mannschaften Artillerie Kugelhelm got in 1894 the M91 chinscale mounts. The Fussartillerie changed their flat brass chinscales to the leather M1891 chinstrap. The Feld Artillerie did not adopt the leather chinstrap in 1894 and wore the curved brass chinscales at all times until 1915.
So all you need now is a leather chinstrap for this helmet...
