Hi,
I remember reading in Harald Geißler's book Das Eiserne Kreuz (1995 Edition) that some nurses have indeed been awarded with a combatant Iron Cross since they served in the front lines and thus underwent similar dangers as regular soldiers. If I recall correctly, these awards on non-combat personnel had been typical for the early years before much more formal rules were applied.
Unfortunately, I no longer have this book to check for more details. (I had it borrowed via a kind friend from Germany.)

Thanks a lot for the info. I'll try to see ifi can find a copy of that book somewhere, a bit odd things like this always interest me a lot and i'd love to know as much about it as possible.
