Odd Imperial EK

Saw this 1914 EK. I don't own it but I was told it was a "Sweet Heart" EK and given to wives/girlfriends to wear. But it is full size, not like the smaller necklace ones I've see. Don't think this would look so nice around a ladies neck Doesn't look like other Sweet Heart pictures I have seen.

Appears that the Pin has been bent to hold a chain but there is no clasp on the bottom.

It is also engraved with the recepients (?) name.

It looks like an interesting piece but I just don't know anything about it. Any information is appreciated.

Odd is right.

Nothing is impossible. This could very well have been
done so that a wife, sweetheart or Widow could wear
it on a chain is possible. It could also have been done
to hang on a watch fob. I have seen several watch fobs
with the smaller 16mm mini Ek attached to them.

Another possibility is that it was done in the 60s to be
worn by a biker or surfer. There is no way to know.

If the price were really good, it would make for an interesting
variation in a collection but it is something that will always
have a question about it and resale would be difficult.

Not exactly what I personally consider "Sweetheart Jewelry"...It appears to be an altered EKII...the catch was removed and the pin replaced with the teardrop-loop for wear with a chain...The tricky thing with such an alteration is that they are difficult to date...I can't comment on the engraved name...Not something I'd spend money on...

Not too wild on the engraving, but it Does have patina In some of the letters, so it just may be from the period(or not!). An interesting piece.

Hi Michael,
Judging by the pictures, the catch has been removed ( looks like traces still left ), and possible the needle has been cut down and bend to form the hanging device. It has been removed to solder the ring probably and then refitted :-)
Work seems to have been done by a professional !
I have never seen engraving exact like this one, it seems a bit "modern" in design, to me, but I don't know, it is hand engraved .

I agree that the engraving looks quite modern. Moreover, given the rather formalist and reserved fashion in which is the name written, I have some doubts about the Sweat Heart theory. For a woman would be the first name of her loved one far more important than his family name. But that is just a plain speculation.

One way or another, definitely not an everyday cross. Whatever the story was I am sure it has to be interesting.
